Akai AP 206

Manufactured between 1978 and 1979, the Akai AP-206 is a well-built semi-automatic direct-drive turntable, representative of Akai’s commitment to engineering quality at the time.

Akai was often underrated, but the AP-206 proves they knew what they were doing—this unit offers solid performance, clean lines, and reliable operation. The S-shaped tonearm is well-balanced and tracks confidently, with automatic return at the end of play, making it user-friendly without compromising control.

Performance specs include:

  • Signal-to-noise ratio: 70 dB

  • Wow and flutter: 0.035%

  • Direct drive mechanism ensures rotational stability

What makes this particular example unique is the custom woodwork. The original top veneer was replaced with real wood veneer, giving it a warmer and more elegant presence. The plastic bottom base was removed, replaced by a hand-built black-painted wooden base—a tasteful and functional upgrade that enhances both aesthetics and acoustic isolation.

Sound-wise, the AP-206 punches above its weight: quiet, stable, and with a very natural tonal balance. It’s the kind of deck that surprises you—not flashy, but very competent and rewarding to listen to.
