Pioneer PL 518

The Pioneer PL-518, launched in 1978, is an interesting unit from the mid-range of Pioneer’s lineup.

A direct-drive turntable built to last, it has no belts and can play non-stop for decades. The PL-518 shares many similarities with the PL-540 and PL-560, including the same chassis and S-shaped tonearm. The 540 and 560 add quartz lock motors and advanced features, with the PL-560 being fully automatic.

It features auto-return and quick-start, meaning the platter spins as soon as the needle touches the record, and the tonearm automatically lifts and returns at the end of playback — making it very simple to operate.

Controls are grouped conveniently on the right side along with the strobe light for easy speed monitoring.

Pioneer developed a 16-pole, 24-slot DC servo motor specifically for the PL-518, later used in the PL-520. This motor’s magnetic circuit is twice as strong as conventional direct-drive types, reducing torque ripple caused by uneven magnetic force, while its switching frequency doubled to 13.3 Hz. These improvements lead to better load handling, consistent speed accuracy, and ultimately improved sound quality.

For its price range, the PL-518’s performance was outstanding, boasting a signal-to-noise ratio of 73dB or better and wow/flutter of 0.03% or less.

A common flaw is that the rubber feet tend to degrade over time, making models with original feet hard to find.

Overall, the PL-518 is a solid, reliable turntable with good sound and simple operation, a great choice for vintage audio lovers.
