Pioneer FM R301 Audio Master

This is the early, beautiful and rare Pioneer FM-R301 Audio Master monophonic receiver — a true historical piece and a significant milestone in the evolution of Pioneer. Released in May 1958 by Fukuin Electric Co., just before the full transition to the Pioneer brand name, the FM-R301 stands as Pioneer’s very first receiver with an integrated FM tuner.

With its distinctive mid-century aesthetic, the unit features a striking pink and gold front panel, large round knobs, and a glowing “magic eye” tuning tube, giving it that unmistakable 1950s charm. The craftsmanship and styling are as unique as they are iconic — the design is a blend of form and function, built to impress both technically and visually.

The magic eye tuning tube is more than just a novelty — it provides visual feedback for precise tuning. As the user approaches the correct frequency, the illuminated green bar becomes more focused and narrow, helping achieve maximum signal strength with a simple glance.

The FM-R301 offers AM (MW), FM, and Shortwave (SW) reception, giving it impressive flexibility for its time. On the back, you’ll find Auxiliary and Phono inputs, allowing connection to external sources, making it more than just a radio — it’s a full-fledged audio control center for a mono hi-fi system.

It operates on 117V or 110V mains, which was standard at the time for Japan and the US. For use in regions with different voltage standards (220V–240V), a step-down transformer will be required (not included).

Completely original and unrestored, this unit is a rare collector’s piece — a remarkable example of early Japanese hi-fi innovation, and a testament to the quality and vision that would define Pioneer’s legacy in the decades to come.

A beautiful and historically important mono tube receiver, the FM-R301 is a treasure for serious collectors and vintage audio enthusiasts alike.
