Denon PMA 850 II

The original PMA-850 had no rec-out option or Class A mode, but the PMA-850II has everything — except the muting switch, which is replaced by the Class A / B function. It features improved internal layout, better specifications, and is, predictably, the rare beast — rarely seen even in Japan and highly sought after by collectors and audiophiles alike.

The PMA-850II has been further refined in terms of materials, topology and switching speed. Based on a fully symmetrical push-pull circuit in all stages, it adheres closely to the ideal “pure Class A” principle. It uses high-quality EBT output transistors to achieve a stable 100W + 100W output in Class B mode, while maintaining 22W per channel in Class A, with outstanding transparency, fluidity, and control.

This amplifier is built with an emphasis on low distortion, wide frequency response, and superb channel separation. The internal design is extremely clean and over-engineered, with discrete components and no shortcuts in component quality or layout. The attention to thermal dissipation and mechanical stability also stands out — this is a serious piece of hi-fi engineering.

It includes three phono inputs (2x MM and 1x MC), something incredibly rare even in high-end integrated amplifiers, making it a perfect match for analog enthusiasts with multiple turntables or cartridges.

Switching between Class A and Class B allows users to choose between the warmth and nuance of Class A or the raw power of Class B depending on the listening scenario.

Physically, it’s an imposing unit, both in size and weight, with a clean, industrial design that reflects its no-compromise engineering. The build quality is exceptional — knobs and switches feel precise and solid, and the faceplate has a timeless, minimalistic charm.

The sound? Truly fantastic. Whether in Class A or B, the PMA-850II delivers a dynamic, detailed, and immersive presentation with powerful bass, crystal-clear highs, and a smooth midrange. It’s musical, engaging, and endlessly satisfying to listen to.

A very rare and special device, especially in this condition — for serious collectors and true lovers of vintage Japanese audio excellence.
